Members attending Central Florida Electric Cooperative’s meeting Saturday voted in favor of selling Fiber by Central Florida to Conexon.
The sale will be for over $100 million, covering, at a mininimum, all of the debt CFEC incurred while building its fiber network.
Some members expressed concerns over prices increases and customer service.
Conexon Co-CEO Jonathan Chambers said that while Conexon would not offer the current lowest rate of $49.99 for 100 mbps to new customers (its lowest offering is $59.99 for 200 mbps), it would grandfather in anyone on that plan.
CFEC General Manager Denny George was asked about any possible price locks. He said that would be impossible to guarantee, but reassured members that Fiber by Central Florida’s prices were based on Conexon’s.
One member asked George about allowing members to vote by mail. She said many members are not able to make it to the actual meeting, but they still have to pay their bills and are affected by what happens at the meeting.
George said the CFEC board is looking into that, but it would require a change to the bylaws.
After multiple questions, members in attendance began to shout for a vote.
The “yes” votes had a clear two-thirds majority after members raised their American flags, approving the sale.
