GCSO apprehends burglary suspect

Gilchrist County Sheriff’s Office arrested a man in connection to a burglary in the southwest part of the county.
Deputies arrested 34-year-old Alex Joshua Viers, of North Dakota on multiple charges.
GCSO received a report of a burglary in process on Jan. 14, according to a Facebook post.
The victim reported that a white male suspect drove onto the property in a black BMW, entered the shed and stole a chainsaw and gas cans, the Facebook post said.
The suspect fled the scene “at a high rate of speed” in the direction of the victim, nearly striking the victim with his car, the post said.

The victim followed the Viers in a vehicle. Viers then appeared to run out of fuel near the intersection of County Road 334 and County Road 307.
The victim stopped, and an altercation occurred. Viers took the victim’s phone and threw it into a nearby field before running away on foot, the post said.
Deputies arrrived on scene and established a perimeter. GCSO requested assistance from Lancaster C.I., which responded with a K9 tracking team, according to the post.
K9 “Ruby” was deployed and tracked and located the suspect, leading to the arrest, the post said.
The suspect positively identified Viers, and the stolen property was recovered and returned.
Viers was charged with burglary, robbery, aggravated assault, theft, trespassing and resisting an officer without violence.
“Sheriff Schultz would like to commend his deputies for their quick response and professionalism, and thank all agencies who assisted in this case. A special thank you goes to K9 “Ruby” for outstanding work, she has definitely earned a dog treat,” the post said.
