The Gilchrist County Board of County Commissioners heard and denied an application to close a portion of SE 75th Court Monday.
The petition to close the road was filed by Jonathan and Kimberly Wheat last August.
Also known as Fish ‘n’ Hunt Road, the 66-foot-wide right of way dead ended into a agricultural property.
The BOCC has recently closed two other sections of road in that area.
County Attorney David Lang said the county has not maintained that road despite owning it.
Commissioner Tommy Langford said he visited the road, and it was mowed. He also expressed concern that it would making accessing the agricultural property more difficult if they closed the road.
Chairman Bill Martin added that the county has closed other roads because the board did not think it would affect other people in the area, but it turned out to have negative affects on other property owners in the area.
Kimberly Wheat, one of the petitioners, said that the road has not been used in at least 12 yearrs, and it had not been mowed until the county put out signs saying the road could be closed.
She said she paid around $800 to have the area surveyed based on advice from county staff.
Scott Tucker, who leases the agricultural land, said the property is not accessed often, but it makes it easier to get equipment and crops to a hard road. He said crops like green beans can be damaged if they are carried on rough dirt roads for too long.
The board voted to deny the petition and reimburse the petitioners. They asked for county staff to not advise applicants until the board hears the issue.
