Trenton hangs on to beat Chiefland

Trenton saw an early 14-0 lead disappear, but the Tigers were able to mount a late drive to beat Chiefland Friday night, 21-14.
The Tigers jumped out to a 14-0 lead early and looked like they would take that lead into the halftime break.
But disaster struck as an option pitch hit the dirt and was picked up by the Indians and returned for a touchdown just before the end of the first half.
Suddenly, despite Chiefland’s offense struggling in the first 24 minutes of game time, the Tigers found themselves in a one-score game at the break.
It got worse in the third quarter as Chiefland quarterback Emarious Carter hit running back Brayden Hankins uncovered on a wheel route for a 61-yard touchdown to tie the game at 14.
But in the fourth quarter, the Tigers put together a long march to the end zone in an attempt to take the lead and the win.
After having a pair of touchdowns called back due to penalties, the Tigers had 4th and 6 deep in Chiefland territory.
Trenton drew the Indians offside, then did it again on the ensuing 4th and 1 to set up a 1st and goal.
Trenton would score to take a 21-14 lead with less than a minute left and held on to win.
Trenton ran 57 plays in the game. Fifty-four came on the ground as the Tigers piled up 223 rushing yards.
Wyatt Vanlandingham led the way with 32 carries for 145 yards and touchdown. Zayne Braswell had 14 carries for 60 yards and two scores in the win.
Trenton controlled the time of possession and the line of scrimmage, limitting Chiefland to just 33 plays on offense and holding the Indians to -2 rushing yards. Carter completed eight of his 18 passes for 178 yards and a touchdown.
The Tigers host Bell for homecoming this week.
Trenton enters the game at 4-1 while the Bulldogs are 5-1.
Bell bounced back from its first loss of the season to Keystone Heights by blowing out Eagle’s View, 40-6.
