The Florida Highway Patrol is monitoring roadways in Gilchrist County, as well as Lafayette, Dixie, Columbia, Alachua and Suwannee, due to a fire in Lafayette County.

FHP said a 1,400-acre brush fire in South Canal near Mallory Swamp can lead to reduced visibility for drivers.

FHP urges drivers to use extreme caution, increase following distance, reduce speed and use low-beam headlights to improve visibility in foggy or smoky conditions.

Visibility may deteriorate rapidly during nighttime and early morning hours when smoke can combine with moisture to create dense hazardous conditions, FHP said.

Travelers should remain alert and prepared for sudden changes while driving.
