County to begin process for multiple possible speed limit changes

The Gilchrist County Board of County Commissioners voted to advertise possible speed limit changes on several roads in the county Monday afternoon.
The first road was NW 100th Street, as well as 101st, 102nd and 103rd. County Administrator Bobby Crosby recommended changing the speed limit on those roads to 25 miles per hour.
The roads are currently unmarked, and unmarked rural roads have a default speed limit of 55 miles per hour.
The vote was solely to advertise the possible change, and it does not mean that the change will happen.
Commissioner Bill Martin moved to go forward with advertising and Commissioner Sharon Langford seconded the motion. The vote was 4-0 to move forward.
The commissioners also voted to approve advertising speed limit changes on NE 48th Court along with SE 78th Place, 77th Lane, 78th Street and 79th Court.
All of those streets would be changed to 25 miles per hour.
The board also voted to chip and seal SW 10th Street west of 341.
The total cost of this project is $91,641.72. Twenty-seven residents who live on or near the road will produce $46,000 for the project, making the county’s share $45,641.72.
The Gilchrist County Prevention Coalition asked the commission about using Hart Springs and having admission be waived from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 2 for Hope Fest.
Crosby and the commissioners were concerned about waiving admission during the in-season Saturday at Hart and the loss of revenue that would cause.
There was also concern of setting a precedent where multiple weekends would not generate revenue due to events being held at the park.
The location was eventually changed to Otter Springs, which will not be completely finished by May 2, so the commission allowed admission to be waived for that weekend under those circumstances, which made them feel it would not create a precedent in which they would have to allow other groups to use the park and waive admission for a similar event.
