Bell football player facing charges after taking opponent’s helmet, hitting him with it

A Bell High School football player is facing charges after taking an opposing player’s helmet off and using it to hit him in the head.
The Fernandina Beach Police Department posted on Facebook Tuesday that it had secured an arrest warrant for 18-year-old Daniel Byers because removed the helmet of a 15-year-old Fernandina Beach player and subsequently struck him in the head with it.
According to the post, the referees and coaching staffs intervened quickly, but multiple scuffles broke out.
Two FBPD officers who were working the game were able to regain control and separate those were involved, the post said.
Bell Head Coach and Athletic Director Joey Whittington said he was not able to comment due the investigation, but said it is being handled at the program, school and district level.
