It’s your first year. What are you expecting this year?
This year, I expect us to kind of get the opportunity to see what we can do. It’s a new offense, new coaching staff, new philosophy, so the first thing that I would like to see is if the kids are buying into what we’re doing and being able to catch up to the offense and be able to run it the way we need to.
What are some changes you’ve made in the program so far?
We actually had to come in and change the culture a little bit, and, as you noticed, on the coaching staff, a lot of them are alumni of Trenton High School, which makes a big difference. You know, they’re excited about it. I wanted to bring them back first and foremost, but I wanted to instill discipline and structure. And just changing the culture was the biggest thing I wanted to do, and I think we’re on the right path. It might take a little while, but we’re on the path now for it.
Who are some guys that stuck out to in the spring and so far in the fall?
I think we got a couple of kids. You know, I don’t like to really highlight anybody in particular because we’re a team-oriented thing, but you’ll see a lot of Alex Henry, Jackson Gentry, Zayden Bon moved from tight end to offensive tackle, Trent Patterson, he’s a very good offensive lineman. We’ve got a lot of kids other than them that are going to produce for us this year. Brant Bivens, of course. There’s some natural ones.
What are the games that you’re looking forward to this year?
Hey, we’re Trenton, so we’re always interested in that Gilchrist County rivalry, We want to make it back. You know, Bell’s won two out of three years, so one of things that we highlight here is we want to take of the rivals: Bell, Chiefland and Dixie. So we’re focusing on that. We’re focusing on everybody. We’re trying to improve each week on the schedule.
What can your fans expect to see on Friday nights?
Well, I think what they’ll come to see here Friday nights is a little bit of excitement. We’ve got a lot of things other than just football going on. Our new band director, she’s a Trenton alumnae, cheerleading coach changed as well, so I think you’re going to see a lot more of a game atmosphere now at Trenton than you used to, kind of back the way it was in the early teens. So that’s what we want to bring. We want to bring back the excitement. We want the community to be involved. We want them to feel welcome. We want them to be a part of the program with us, because that’s what it is. Trenton is a small town, just like some of the other ones, and that’s what we want to bring back.
Is there anything we haven’t talked about already that you feel like everyone needs to know?
One of my goals and ambitions here at Trenton High School was to, you know, if you look at the new logos on the helmet, we now have the paw and the double “T.” The paw was when I played football, we had a paw kind of like Clemson, and the double “T” kind of came in in the teens, so I wanted to integrate the old with the new because now some of the older alumni: they see that, they like that we brought it back. You know, add a little twist to it with the chrome and everything. The kids like that stuff. So that’s one of the things I think you’ll see here. But other than that, we’re just going to get out here and try to play some football games and see what we can do, and, hopefully, the season works out the way we want to and improve from last year.
