Trenton looking at options to reduce speeding on NW 1st St

The City of Trenton discussed ways to stop speeding on NW 1st St. at Monday’s meeting.
The current speed limit on the road is 25 miles per hour. The city asked about decreasing the speed limit, but Trevor Noyes of North Florida Professional Services, City Attorney David Lang and Trenton Chief of Public Safety Matthew Rexroat all said their research found that the Florida of Department of Transportation says anything below 25 miles per hour is not supoorted or enforceable.
Noyes said a crosswalk could be effective solution.
Rexroat said the city could make the intersection of NW 1st St. and NW 1st Ave. a four-way stop, forcing cars to slow down and putting crosswalks at the stop signs.
This was a discussion item, so no vote was taken.
The City Commission also discussed raising the expenditure limits for department heads.
City Manager Brittany Mills said the current limits are $10,000 for the city manager and $1,000 for all department heads before a purchase has to be approved by the commission.
Mills asked for the new limits to be $10,000 for city manager, $5,000 for Chief of Public Safety and $2,500 for all other department heads.
The spending limits are set by an ordinance, so they would require amending the ordinance. Amending an ordinance requires a first and second reading.
Trenton’s next meeting will be Monday, Feb. 24 at 5:30 p.m..
