Gilchrist Rotary Club Finishes Their Series of County Department Head Guest Speakers with the Sheriff’s Office
By Colleen Caudill
On March 25th, Chef Jason served country style pot pie, classic salad, dessert and sweet and unsweet tea. After lunch, there were a few updates for the club including; Rotarian member Doug Beach being inducted to the hall of fame, welcoming two new members, Colleen Caudill and Mark McEntire, and praising volunteers who helped at the quilt festival the Saturday before.
The guest speaker for this meeting was Sheriff Bobby Schultz and few other representatives from the Gilchrist Count Sheriff’s Office. He spoke passionately about his team and how proud he is of the current state of the county. For over the past twelve years, crime has continuously gone down each year. He also touched on how much the sheriff’s office loves to be involved with the community, practicing public speaking, being involved in education, prioritizing school safety, and being active and available during public events.
Robert Willis, the Undersheriff, also spoke briefly and proudly about their team. Along with the motto; One Team, One Mission, they have a valuable team made up of seventy-five differently skilled individuals working together to serve the community. He also gave an update on the new jail being built, which should be finished hopefully in June, and how it will bring many benefits to the county and increase safety. They also touched on county resources and how they can get stretched on the weekends due to an influx in visitors. Officially, Gilchrist County houses 18,000 locals, however, on weekends there can be an upwards of 10,000 more people in the county, so they’re always working to balance the county’s resources and budget to where the county always gains the benefit.
