Trenton receiving complaints about chickens

Trenton Public Safety Director Matthew Rexroat told the Trenton City Commission that chickens on residential properties are drawing complaints from neighbors.
Rexroat said chickens are not allowed in the city limits unless the property is in an agricultural land use zone.
City Attorney David Lang said there is very little agricultural land in the city limits.
Rexroat said Gainesville has a cap on the number of chickens one can own, but roosters are banned.
City Manager Lyle Wilkerson said roosters will become a noise issue.
“I think that’s a nice thing for people to have,” Mayor Robbi Coarsey Avery said.
She added roosters would not be a good idea because of how close the houses are.
Lang said the City is opening a can of worms by deciding which animals residents are allowed to have on their properties.
Rexroat said this is one of “a lot” of ordinances that need to be looked at.
“We need to do some research,” Coarsey Avery said.
