Gilchrist County elementary students have had some different teachers over the last few weeks.
Gilchrist County Schools have held Literacy Week and Science Days recently.
Literacy is an initiative from the Florida Department of Education designed to raise awareness about the importance of reading and to inspire Florida’s students and families to make reading part of their daily routines.
Literacy week had several activities with the goal of getting students excited about reading, including a literacy parade in which members of the community with different professions read to the classes.

For Science Day, presenters came to BES on Feb. 1 and TES on Feb. 2 and did demonstrations based on Florida’s Next Generation Sunshine State Standards.
Presenters for Science Day included Michelle Jones and the officers of the BHS Criminal Justice program; the Science Guy Steve Wilson; Jade Salamone and Cameron Wolf from the Santa Fe College Teaching Zoo; Joe Mackenzie and Thomas Gorton from the Florida Forestry Service; FWC Officers Kyle Williams and Luzette Musen; GCSO K9 Deputy Fricke; Troy Roberts and Chelsea Dinon from Suwannee River Water Management; Cacee and Jordan Hilliard, from Feeding Florida and FWC; Alaura Brown and Braley Hines representing 83 Farms; Jan Gonthier and Alex Santana from the Health Department; David Froiseth from the Alachua Astronomy Club; Logan Cutts, who presented on bees and how they help everyone; and Kathy Sites, who presented on motion and sound.
Donations were received from Christy McElroy, Gina Geiger, Brenda Dees, Cuttin’ Up Family Salon, Gilchrist County Herald, the Santa Fe College Teaching Zoo and theFarm Stand.
Donations helped students purchase Science Kits from the Science Guy and gave them tickets to the Santa Fe Zoo and strawberries for the Feeding Florida presentation.
