Simple Recipes

This weekend we celebrated a win! My husband Mitchel, my oldest brother Michael and two of their friends Steve and Joe have been competing in BBQ cook offs. This was their fourth year and turns out best so far. We attended the BBQ banquet Saturday night Mitchel, Michael and Joe took top honors for pork, ribs and brisket respectively. They won team of the year for the backyard division. It was very exciting to see their hard work pay off. Going forward they will compete in the Pro division. They actually went to the American Royal, in Kansas City this year for the first time. It’s the World Series of BBQ. They met and competed against some of the best. They learned a lot and had a decent showing. Can’t wait to see what the future holds for them.
Sunday after church we went for our annual pick a Christmas tree for our house. Even though the boys are now young men, they graciously go for Mom’s sake. It is still so special to have them go and look through to find what is deemed “the one”. It is definitely one of my treasured memories with the boys.
This is a busy week for our family. We will start our annual cane grinding on Friday. All of us get together at my Dad’s and spend the weekend making syrup and memories. This is a tradition that has gone way back for us and look forward to it as our children start to take on more and more of the jobs that come with this process. We enjoy having all those that have been regulars through the years and meeting new people that come.
This week I thought I would stick with the BBQ theme with my recipe. This recipe is a sauce that my Mom made for as long as can remember. It doesn’t have precise measurements, but it’s not hard to figure out as you taste while making it. We always put it on a whole chicken, cut into quarters and grilled. Using a grill mop to paint it on as the chicken cooked.
Sarah’s BBQ sauce
1 bottle ketchup
1 bottle vinegar
Crushed red pepper
Dry mustard
Brown sugar
About 4 thin slices of lemon and onion. You can add a little more if you’d like.
Mix first five ingredients in a sauce pan and heat on medium high until sugar has melted. Add lemons and onion and cook til they are soft. Let simmer til ready to use. Can also be made ahead of time. Reserve some of the sauce to add to your chicken at the table.
Remember you can submit your favorite recipe, just email it to the paper. If you have a memory to go with it please send that also.
May y’all have a blessed week!
