Bulldogs shut out Bronson to reach SSAA 1A championship game

Bell travels to Cocoa to take on Space Coast Friday at 7 p.m.

Facing a win-or-go-home scenario, the Bulldogs put together their best game of the season.
Bell jumped out to a 40-0 lead in the first half and let the JV players maintain the shut out as the Bulldogs cruised to their second win of the season and a spot in the SSAA 1A championship game on Friday.
“This is why we joined the SSAC: to get in these situations where it’s a win-and-advance, lose-and-you’re-done situation,” Bell head coach Joey Whittington said. “We’re trying to build that winning mentality.”
Bell got off to a quick start, receiving the opening kickoff and scoring in just over three minutes to take a 6-0 lead.
Bell’s defense then forced a quick three and out, and the Bulldogs added on to their lead when Lucas Stapp punched it in from a yard out to double the lead to 12-0.
Bronson was able to move the ball on the ensuing possession, but Bell’s defense ended the drive with an interception by Levi Jacobs.
Bell scored seven seconds into the second quarter when Hunter Hilliard connected with Alijah Klingerman for a four-yard touchdown pass. Bell converted the two-point try to take a 20-0 lead.
The Eagles looked like they had a chance to stop the bleeding, getting deep into Bulldog territory. However, Bell forced a turnover on downs to get the ball back.
Bell answered quickly as Kaleb Williams went 70 yards for a touchdown to extend the lead to 26-0.
Bell would get its second interception of the game, this time from Landin Williams.
Bell quickly took advantage of the turnover as Cole Rarey went 55 yards for the score to give Bell a 33-0 lead.
After another turnover on downs, Bell would find the end zone again as Landin Williams added a touchdown to the interception already on his stat sheet and gave Bell a 40-0 lead.
With the running clock enacted, Bell would hang on to the shut out and the 40-0 win.
Bell racked up 369 yards rushing in the win, their highest total of the season and 142 more than the previous high of 227 against Seven Rivers.
The win moves the Bulldogs’ record to 2-7 on the season.
“This season hasn’t been easy for us,” Whittington said. “We were slow out of the gate, but at least we had this at the end of the season to build toward.”
Bell will travel to Cocoa Friday night for the SSAA 1A championship.
They will face a Space Coast team that went 0-8 this season.
The Vipers had last week off. They lost to Astronaut 34-14 in their last game. They have also been shut out of four of their eight games and have scored 33 points all season.
“I think our play over the last half of the season has improved,” Whittington said. “So taking care of this and having a chance to go down to Space Coast next week and win our bracket is what it’s all about for us.”
