Bible Talk with Kent Heaton

YOUR HOME IS BUGGED. Yes, your home is bugged. In every home, there are two microphones per child – one in each ear. These highly sensitive instruments pick up the table prayers, the hymns sung, ordinary conversations, incidental remarks, and a variety of words. These all-absorbing microphones transmit all they hear to highly impressionable minds. Be careful what you say.
It is easy to forget the impression we leave on our children. If we take a moment and think about our own childhood and the impressions we developed as we grew up, it will remind us of how powerful the influences made us who we are. We hold many attitudes and opinions that are cultural to our family upbringing. So much is said in the home. If we forget that children are present, we will leave an impression that will form their lives – good or bad.
Children are like sponges. They soak in all that is around them. As sensitive microphones, they listen to how parents speak to one another. They see their parents’ attitudes as noble characteristics to follow to become like them – whether good or bad. A child who uses foul language probably heard it from his father or mother. Children who are disrespectful to authority can learn these traits from the attitudes found in the home.
The parents who demand their children do as they are told and not as they see their parents do are fools at best. Children see through the hypocrisy. Their little microphones are sensitive to the actions of the parents. They will grow up and follow their parents no matter how hard they try to convince them to do otherwise. Many a home is destroyed because the parents failed to understand their home was bugged.
God created the family and gave the best advice for parents and children. While the negative influence on a child can be destructive, the positive teaching of right and wrong will give the child a life filled with greater satisfaction. The Bible admonishes the parents to “train up a child in the way that he should go” (Proverbs 22:6). Fathers are to bring their children up in the training and admonition of the Lord (Ephesians 6:1-4). God has always wanted the home to be a place where He is the central figure, and His word is the law (Deuteronomy 6).
Your home is bugged. Take the opportunity to teach your children the love of God. There is a greater reward when your family serves God than the trappings of a world filled with hatred, prejudice, discontent, and malice. The Bible is the family altar where the hearts of the children can find the answers to life. We are blessed with many families seeking the Lord Jesus Christ. Come visit with the Trenton Church of Christ. Do you need a Bible? We believe the Bible helps us know how to be a united family. Families are essential. God’s word shows the way.
