Suspicious package leads to closure of Courthouse, 129

Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2023, at around 10:15 a.m. GCSO Courthouse Deputies were notified of a suspicious item in the Courthouse parking lot.
A Courthouse Deputy and Trenton Department of Safety Officer investigated and located the suspicious item. The subsequent investigation revealed through witness statements that the item may be harmful. At that time the decision was made to establish a perimeter and notify the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office Bomb squad to determine if the item was a threat. The ASO Bomb Squad arrived and expanded the perimeter to assure the safety of the public during their investigation which resulted in the temporary closure of US Hwy 129.
The ASO Bomb Squad recovered the item and determined no threat existed. The perimeter was released, and normal operations were resumed at the Courthouse just before 1 p.m..
Sheriff Schultz would like to thank everyone for their patience during this event. The safety of the public is always the utmost priority. Sheriff would also like to thank all the agencies that assisted with handling this matter.
