County Commission finalizes tax rates

The Gilchrist County Board of County Commissioners finalized its tax rates for the 2025-2026 fiscal year Monday evening.
The board maintained the rates voted on at the tentative budget hearing: a general millage rate of 8.5 mills and an EMS municipal services taxing unit millage rate of 0.9026 mills.
The general millage rate is down from 8.7 mills last year, but it is still around 8 percent higher than the rolled back rate. The general budget decreased by $1 million from last year, going from $64.5 million to $63.5 million.
The EMS MSTU went to the rolled back rate, meaning the county is expected to generate the same amount of revenue as it did last year through that taxing unit.
The fire assessment remains the same as it was last year at $170. Solid Waste also remains the same at $120.
In the regular meeting, commissioners discussed a possible food truck court and ice machine at the intersection of State Road 47 and County Road 340.
The one-acre property would have nine parking spaces and room for two food trucks that would change.
The property is northeast of the intersection.
The only entrance would be on CR 340 using the current turn lane.
Sheriff Bobby Schultz said he is for the property, but he has concerns about parking in the county right of way on CR 340 and traffic during peak time periods for the springs.
After discussing using reflective delineators in the right of way to prevent parking on the side of the road, the commissioners approved both the site plan and the special use permit with changes (the delineators on the right of way).
